3 HVAC Maintenance Tasks Homeowners Can Safely Do on Their Own

The HVAC system in your home is a fairly complex machine. Since many homeowners in Hampstead, North Carolina, use it nearly every day to stay comfortable throughout the year, it’s important to keep it in working order. While there are many maintenance tasks homeowners can safely do themselves, most should be performed by a trained professional to ensure proper functioning. Keep reading to learn which HVAC maintenance tasks are safe for you to perform on your heating and cooling systems throughout the year.

Change the Air Filter

Depending on the type of air filter in your HVAC system, you should generally replace it every 30-60 days. Simply turn off your system and locate your air filter. Then take it out, insert a new filter and turn your system back on. Regularly changing out your air filter maintains good air quality and good airflow. As a result, it helps maintain system efficiency.

Clean the Air Registers

Another HVAC maintenance task that’s safe for you to do yourself is to regularly clean your air registers. You probably notice dust buildup from time to time in and around your air grilles and vents. You can clean off buildup by first vacuuming off the loose dust and debris. Then use a wet cloth to remove the rest of the buildup. Maintaining clean air registers helps maintain clean indoor air and proper airflow.

Clear Debris Around the Unit

You should also keep your indoor and outdoor units clear of debris and clutter. Make sure that any tree branches or bushes near the outdoor unit are clear at least 18 inches from the sides and several feet from the top of the unit. Clearing away branches and debris improves airflow and system efficiency. Also, remove any clutter that may have collected around the indoor unit to avoid fire hazards.
